How to Start a Sticker or Card Collection Without Making the Most Common Mistakes

·by CambioCromos

Some people start a collection because their child asks for an album when passing by a kiosk.

Others return to the hobby after twenty years, driven by nostalgia.

And there are also those who discover Pokémon, Magic, or Lorcana cards thanks to a friend and end up completely hooked.

The reason changes. What is usually the same is the first feeling.

Not knowing where to start.

Should I buy packs? Do I need an album? Is it better to trade? Is it worth buying individual cards? Do I have to choose a single collection?

The good news is that there is no single way to become a collector.

The bad news is that almost all of us make the same mistakes during the first few weeks.

The first mistake is wanting to do everything

When you discover this world, it is easy to get excited.

You start by looking at a football collection, and before you know it, Pokémon cards, a Lorcana expansion, and some video about Magic also catch your eye.

There is nothing wrong with being curious.

The problem arises when you try to follow all the collections at the same time.

In addition to the money it costs, you will end up feeling like you never make progress in any of them.

That is why almost all collectors recommend the same: start with a single collection.

Once you know it well, there will always be time to explore others.

You don't need to spend a lot of money to enjoy it

There is an idea that collecting is an expensive hobby.

It can be.

But it doesn't have to be.

The difference is usually in how you buy.

Opening packs is fun and part of the hobby, but that doesn't mean you should buy without a limit.

Setting a monthly budget helps you enjoy the collection much more and avoids that feeling of spending too much.

Interestingly, those who have been collecting the longest usually buy fewer packs than beginners.

They have simply learned when it is worth doing so.

Duplicates will arrive sooner than you think

It doesn't matter which collection you choose.

It will happen.

At first they hardly appear.

Then some numbers start to repeat.

And there comes a time when you have a small pile of stickers or cards that you no longer know where to store.

Many beginners consider them a failure.

Experienced collectors see them as an opportunity.

Each duplicate is a chance to get what is still missing.

That's why it's worth keeping them in good condition from day one.

Do not collect only thinking about the value

The internet is full of news about cards sold for thousands of dollars.

It is easy to think that all collections will end up appreciating in value.

The reality is quite different.

Some pieces reach very high prices.

The vast majority do not.

If you start a collection solely as an investment, you might end up disappointed.

On the other hand, if you choose a collection because you really like it, time will work in your favor.

If it increases in value one day, great.

And if it doesn't, you will still enjoy a collection you built step by step.

Organizing the collection from the start makes a difference

There is a phrase that many collectors repeat over time:

"I wish I had started organizing everything from day one."

When the collection is still small, it seems unnecessary.

But as the weeks go by, problems start.

You don't remember which stickers you have duplicated.

You waste time looking for a specific card.

You forget which numbers you are missing.

A little organization prevents all that.

And, besides, it makes trades much simpler.

Talk to other collectors

A collection can be done perfectly in solitude.

But it changes completely when you start sharing it.

You will discover people who have been collecting for years, learn small tricks, and get to know collections you had probably never seen before.

You will also discover something curious.

It doesn't matter how old each person is.

When two collectors talk about their albums or their favorite cards, they all seem to be ten years old again.

Do not be in a hurry to finish

It is perhaps the best advice of all.

Completing a collection brings enormous satisfaction.

But if you turn that goal into an obsession, you run the risk of losing the most fun part.

Opening packs.

Trading.

Discovering new designs.

Meeting people.

Waiting for that card that seems impossible to find.

All of that is also part of the collection.

And, when you finally place the last sticker or card, you realize something curious.

What you really missed was not the empty slot in the album.

It was the whole journey that got you there.

Because the best collections are not the ones completed the fastest.

They are the ones that leave the most memories along the way.
